On March 30, 2020, easyJet grounded its entire fleet of planes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They later closed three of their bases. Though the airline has been spared by the pandemic, it is gradually expanding its fleet.

In 1995, easyJet was established by Stelios, becoming the first company in what would later become the easyGroup conglomerate. When it first launches, the company employs 70 people and is based at London Luton Airport, which chose to give the airline a 15,000-square-foot building as its headquarters. They introduce the "paperless office" concept in their management. The airline initially operated a pair of wet leased Boeing 737-200 aircraft, each capable of seating 130 passengers. These were flown on two routes: Luton to Glasgow and Edinburgh, respectively. Early promotional activity focused on the airline's relatively low pricing compared to incumbent operators. Within its first year, easyJet reportedly carried approximately 40,000 passengers.

For many years, easyJet has been named the Best low-cost airline in Europe. In 2019, it ranked as the world's second-best low-cost airline. In 2016, easyJet was the most decorated airline in the world, taking home 10 different awards in a single year, which included the Best Low-Cost Airlines award from Publituris Portugal Travel. Highest Ranking European Routes Award for services to and from London by Athens International Airport.  The Italian Mission named the airline the best low-cost airline for business travelers, among other things. This year, easyJet received the Italian Mission's Best Sustainability and Inclusion Initiatives of the Year 2022 award.
